Little Word – Great Effect

The all seeing eye
The Story of MIZPAH by Helena Lind.

That mystical word MIZPAH is thousands of years old, symbolizing a sanctuary and place of positive anticipation, where the seemingly impossible could be anything but impossible through deeply held belief and living inspiration.

MIZPAH is mentioned in the Bible (Genesis) as a powerful keyword, when two rather difficult gentlemen named Jacob and Laban agree at Gilead to a sudden heaven sent peace after being at loggerheads for ages and making each others lives miserable. One fine day, perhaps following a very special dream, they are said to have built a stone monument and crowned their wise agreement by  saying: “MIZPAH -The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another”.

Building such MIZPAH monuments was an ancient tradition in the promised land and far beyond – just see the pyramids of Egypt, the Zikkurats of Mesopotamia and other stone built legends. They could be small, simple and rather spontaneous or big and masterfully created – however, they always stood for that very thought of  enlightenment. MIZPAH signified a striking humane, tolerant and solution orientated approach to human issues, (a thought and act more than becoming but sadly neglected throughout history and ever more important if we look to certain corners of the globe today).

If you look back in time and around you it seems, that verything was  and is about material possessions, cold hearted success, hatred, power – the holy scriptures alone are full of the stuff, let alone history. The word and act of MIZPAH introduced clearly defined moral qualities of GOODNESS, KINDNESS and the courage to UNDERSTANDING to a time so very tough that we should better stop moaning about our world today and its challenges and problems.

Life is hard – yet any obstacle can be overcome with good will and determination. That was, is and always will be the heart of the true meaning of MIZPAH.
