USA: Parsimony and the Pursuit of Happiness

ThriftyAmericanShoppers
While we are told that there is a silver lining at the US recession horizon, US shoppers are looking after the pennies and are not very likely to go back to mo-matter-what-spending in a hurry.
Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy .com:
“Lower-income households can’t borrow and higher-income households no longer feel wealthy,” Mr. Zandi added. “There’s still a lot of debt out there. It throws a pall over the potential for a strong recovery. The economy is going to struggle.”
Are old virtues like “need not-want not” settling in again?
Honestly, the way consumers lashed out the cash these last years before the crisis was unhealthy and wrong. Micro-economically wrong of course seen through the eyes of a modern economist (whatever that’s worth). Now many many are weaned off the constant need to buy, amass and throw away lots of useless stuff and perhaps see the blessing in disguise as they will fare much better without this other form of drug dependence?
But our mythical US shopper might not stay off it long and every spare dollar will begin to burn holes in pockets and purses yet again. The States used to gain 70% of their economical action from those credit card abusing good Americans.
But perhaps there is a chance for more than a few to understand that happiness and compulsary shopping are two totally different planets and that being careful with money is a good thing.
Businesses will have to adjust to lower demand and yes they can.
We might see a return of healthy aspiration in many aspects.
Right now Americans are beginning to alter their taste and to look out for more value than before. Not just price-wise but also regarding low quality goods. Less junk – more joy.
That will be the next lesson businesses will have to learn and to implement.
Interesting times.
Let us see what happens.

When will they ever learn?

G-20's usual suspects

What? Just because the international financial crisis is carefully declared to be on the way out (I believe that when I see it) the necessary drive to at least try and prevent another total overkill in the future through regulation is now in danger as things ain’t that bad right now or rather not bad enough?
Upcoming G-20 meeting in Pittsburgh might not be too effective.
Raghuram Rajan, former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and now a professor at the University of Chicago said: “We’re getting a recovery, so dealing with the true problems is going to be more difficult. The risk is that we’re just going to tool around until the next crisis.”
What about the mealy-mouthed pledge of all these walking and talking failures of governments “to strengthen financial regulation to rebuild trust” ?
Back to (bad) business as usual?
Fair warning: if they let things slip again, the next crisis will be truly revolutionary. And not far away either.
Khhh…you could not make it up…

Big in Japan

NEWS-US-JAPAN-ELECTION

The sad face of defeated PM Taro Aso is not there for no reason.
He’s just lost a landslide election.
Things are looking up in Japan as newly elected leader Yukio Hatoyama is transitioning to power.
The Nikkei rocketed and an almost Obama-esque feeling of hope is enveloping the land of the rising sun.
About time too.
Now there is a chance to leave behind the petrification of more than 5 decades under the Liberal Democratic Party.
And there are prospects of opening up to a more modern, less male dominated state and welfare system for the legions of unemployed and impoverished Japanese people.
A promising outlook is also beckoning for more cooperation with China.
Hatoyama’s political motto is that of his grandfather: yuai – meaning fraternalism.
Badly needed.
And about time too.
Welcome to the 21st century and looking forward to Japan’s incarnation.

Remembering well

RiverFount

My dear mother quoted my grandfather this morning:

“If you want to reach the fount, you’ll have to strive against the current.”

I remember him saying this to me a lot when I was little.

Taking it to heart, knowing his great strives and knowing full well how right he was.
My mother too was very brave.  And my grandmother.

Very proud of my folks, me.

Moments of remembering your core strengths like bookmarks in the chronicles of our lifes.

And between you and me…only dead fish do swim with the stream, don’t they?

Saw this and thought…

…can anyone really socialize America? ObamaScare

USA Life Expectancy

FATRUS
According to government stats USA life expectancy is the highest ever at now 77.9 years. Even though the rates are still a lot lower than in other developed nations it still begging the question: HOW? Considering their lifestyle related diseases and far too costly and crooked health system (when and where applicable) to me this is a fat conundrum.
What a challenge for ObamaCare.
